Thirty-six years ago, on 27 July 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. From 1991 until 1996, the date was officially celebrated as Belarus’ Independence Day. Marking the anniversary, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the nation.
