Starting on 2 August, Belarus’ Commissioner for Religious and Ethnic Affairs will be appointed personally by Alyaksandr Lukashenka and will report directly to his administration rather than the government. The decision was adopted on 22 July. Belsat spoke to experts to find out why the authorities are tightening control over an already subordinate office and why religion has become such a significant issue for the Belarusian regime.
