On International Mother Language Day, Belsat TV summarized the past few years to understand the current state of the Belarusian language. While officials verbally proclaim a "great demand for Belarusian-language education," in practice, the country is facing systemic de-Belarusization: from the reduction of school classes and the banning of classic books to the torture of political prisoners for using their native language. We have compiled facts about how the Belarusian language is being squeezed out of everyday life, and why, despite the repression, society's demand for a national identity continues to grow.
