The unmanned aircraft maneuvered at low altitude over the city center.
For several days now, Russian kamikaze drones have been increasingly flying over Belarus during air strikes on Ukraine.
The drone that appeared on June 1 near the town of Rechytsa in the Homiel region in the south of the country caused the greatest concern. Between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., the unmanned aircraft not only flew over the city center, but also circled, changing direction at low altitude. Hundreds of people observed this, and eyewitnesses reported what they saw on the internet.
Some of them recognized the distinctive silhouette of an Iranian-made Shahed drone used by Russia. However, some were probably frightened that it was a Ukrainian attack, as on the same day, Ukrainian drones carried out a daring attack on airports deep inside Russia as part of operation “Spider's Web.”
Other drones were also observed flying higher in the Rechytsa area. According to eyewitness accounts, some were red and others were light-colored.
The Belarusian editorial office of Belsat quotes comments from residents of Homiel who reported on the internet that on June 1, at around 3:40 a.m. local time, they were awakened by the loud sound of a drone in the southern suburbs of the city. Then, between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., the drone was heard by residents of other areas of the Homiel region, near Mazyr and Yelsk. At around 8:30 a.m., two drones flew westward over the town of Kalinkavichy. One of them probably crashed in the Petrykau area.
That's not all: two more drones were seen around 8:00 a.m. over Yelsk itself. At around 8:35 a.m., they flew over the border with Ukraine and headed towards the city of Ovruch.
